Web designers had no choice but to spend many billable hours performing repetitive tasks, only to deliver website designs that were less than ideal in appearance.
In the aftermath of the dot-com crash, a new technology changed the field of web design forever. Content management systems eliminated many of the repetitive tasks of web design, and perhaps more importantly, permitted the end-users (the customers) to make changes to their websites without knowing any HTML code. This flexibility and the continued popularity of WordPress means constant upgrades, attention to security, and new features.
