WordPress 3.3 New Features

We recently upgraded all of our client websites to WordPress 3.3. Most of the WordPress core upgrades deal with security and bug fixes, and our clients do not need to be concerned with the details. However, the 3.3 release introduced some new features that will change some of the ways you use WordPress.

Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader. When you use the Media > Add New menu or the Add Media button in the post/page editor, you will see a prominent box with a dotted line border. You can drag and drop files onto the box to upload them, which can be much faster than navigating through your folder structure.

Upload/Insert Buttons Consolidation. Previously, there were separate Upload/Insert buttons for adding images, audio, video, and media. In WordPress 3.3, these have been consolidated into a single button labeled Add Media. You can use this button for any type of media upload.

Flyout Menus. When you hover over menus in the WordPress backend, the sub-menus will appear to the right automatically. This makes the administration menu more compact, and lets you access menus with fewer clicks.

Performance Improvements. It’s unlikely that you will notice a difference, but some technical changes to the core code has improved WordPress loading time.

NextGEN Gallery Plugin Review

NextGEN Gallery is a very popular image gallery plugin for WordPress that makes it easier to manage and organize your images. We recommend it for use on any site where you want to show off multiple images. You can quickly and easily create elegant thumbnail galleries and slideshows. You can then use Lightbox Plus, FancyBox for WordPress, or other Lightbox-type plugins in conjunction with NextGEN Gallery to add popup effects to your images when clicked. [Read more...]

Proper Website Maintenance

Regardless of what kind of website you have, you need to make sure you have proper backup and security procedures in place. And if you are using any kind of software, such as a content management system like WordPress, you also need to be attentive to upgrades. If you have ever managed a website or had the unfortunate experience of being hacked, you know how important these three aspects are, and how disastrous the consequences can be. [Read more...]

Maximizing Your Dropbox Account

Dropbox isn’t just for backups. You can use it to share files, transfer files between computers, and host website files externally.

Dropbox is an easy-to-use, cloud-based file backup and sharing system. You just need to sign up for a free online account to get started. You can also install the optional software to make managing your files much easier. Once you install the software, you will have a local Dropbox folder that behaves the same as any other folder, but it will automatically sync any files and folders inside it with your online account. Socialize Plugin Review

Social media buttons are becoming increasingly common on websites. There are many social media button plugins out there, but the Socialize plugin is by far our favorite. While the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference, we recommend the Socialize plugin above the rest. It gives you all of the major social media buttons and gives you plenty of flexibility with customizing their appearance. [Read more...]

Password Security

If you’re like most people, you probably use the same password for most of your accounts. That password is easy to remember, and probably includes a person’s name or a word in the English language. If any of this sounds familiar, then you have a serious security problem. If one of your accounts hasn’t already been hacked, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. We recommend that you change all of your important accounts to use secure passwords before it is too late. [Read more...]
